Chris Hughton: Ex-Brighton, Fulham, Norwich and Newcastle boss appointed as Ghana manager

Chris Hughton has been appointed to replace incumbent Otto Addo as Ghanaian National Team coach.

The former Ireland international had been involved with the GFA since 2021 as technical advisor to the national team and was part of Addo’s coaching staff for the Qatar World Cup last year.

However, following a disappointing campaign in which Ghana managed only one win and finished bottom of their group, Hughton has been moved into the top job.

The GFA released a statement, saying: “The appointment is in line with the vision of the GFA to continue with the project of building a formidable squad that started with Otto Addo in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament.”

Although still somewhat reliant on the veteran Ayew brothers, Ghana have a number of exciting young stars around which Hughton can build his team.

Sporting forward Abdul Fatawu, Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus are just some of the talents at Hughton’s disposal.

The Ghana job is Hughton’s first managerial role since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2021 and his first full-time coaching position outside England.

Hughton retains assistant coaches George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as he takes over midway through qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars currently sit top of their qualifying group, level on points with Angola.

The tournament will be played in 2024 in Egypt.

Born in England, Hughton is the son of an Irish mother, through whom he qualified to represent the Republic of Ireland 53 times as a player, and a Ghanaian father.

As a player, he spent the majority of his career with Tottenham, who he also coached at various levels including two spells as caretaker manager.
