FA Cup: Grimsby Town stun Southampton to reach historic quarter-final, Burnley snatch last-gasp win over Fleetwood

League Two Grimsby Town are into the last eight of the FA Cup after pulling off a stunning upset to beat Premier League Southampton 2-1 at St. Mary’s.

Gavan Holohan was the hero for the Mariners, who defied their lowly position in the football pyramid to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 1939.

An apparent handball by Saints’ Brazilian defender Lyanco on the stroke of half-time required a VAR check before the first penalty was awarded to the visitors.

Holohan made no mistake from 12 yards as he fired the ball beyond Alex McCarthy.

The 4,000 travelling fans soon found themselves in dreamland after a second penalty was awarded following a foul by Duje Caleta-Car on Danilo Orsi.

Holohan again converted and the unlikely win remarkably looked within touching distance.

However, Caleta-Car went some way to atoning for his earlier error by scoring from close range to reduce the deficit.

Southampton thought they’d found an equaliser through Theo Walcott, however, VAR determined that the winger was just offside.

Grimsby were able to hang on in the dying minutes and now find themselves one match from a Wembley semi-final.

Elsewhere, Championship leaders Burnley needed a last-minute winner from Connor Roberts to get the better of League One side Fleetwood Town.

Vincent Kompany’s side were dominant from minute one but a stubborn Fleetwood defence refused to be breached, even after going down to 10 men following the dismissal of youngster Cian Hayes.

With extra-time approaching, Roberts was able to finish from close range to send the Clarets through.
