Lisowski won the first frame in the morning session to move 7-3 ahead, but not without a fright after prevailing 84-44. It ebbed and flowed both ways in chances missed galore.
Saengkham missed a red to the right corner, Lisowski then missed a blue to the green and the Thai squandered an opportunity on a cut-back red.
It all became very scrappy in this battle between two players known for their potting talents. Lisowski left a free ball, but Saengkham missed it. He then left a green for Lisowski to pot and secure the frame.
Saengkham bounced back though and secured the next frame 68-61 in another absorbing battle. With the score level at 61-61, it looked like Lisowski had left a simple one to yellow, but Saengkham missed it. There was not much in the way of quality snooker, but the crowd were soaking up every minute of the tension.
The frame was eventually decided in a black ball shootout, leaving Lisowski to rue his negative approach and for allowing the Thai to get back into the match.
This seemed to prompt the man from Churchdown to get his act in order and he emerged victorious in the 12th frame with a 72-23 victory.
A break of 65 ultimately proved decisive and he was able to build a quick lead after potting a superb rest shot. However, there was hope for Saengkham when Lisowski missed a pink and left him needing two snookers on his return to the table.
Saengkham was able to pot a few balls before leaving a snooker on the final red. Lisowski was able to escape and nearly sent it into the green bag, as Saengkham knocked it away. The world No. 32 was hoping for a free ball, but that chance went with only the coloured balls left on the table. Lisowski was then able to see out the frame and move 8-4 ahead.
Lisowski moved within one frame of victory after winning the 13th frame 58-14, as a poor shot from Saengkham left a long red to the left corner for the Englishman to clip in well. He made hard work of it in the end, but was ultimately able to take that final red.
However, Saengkham refused to go down without a fight and recovered to win the next two frames. He reduced the deficit to 9-5 with a break of 62, before wrapping up the 15th frame comprehensively 75-6 with after Lisowski missed a red to left corner and allowed Saengkham to clear the table.
The unlikeliest of comebacks was gathering even more momentum when Saengkham claimed a sensational break of 130 to cut the arrears to 9-7, and Lisowski was really being made to sweat.
But Lisowski finally put the game to potting the pink ball to win the 17th and final frame 71-51 and set up a second-round meeting with either Judd Trump or Anthony McGill.
