Judd Trump makes 140 break to sweep past Scott Donaldson at English Open, Mark Selby, John Higgins also win

Judd Trump reached the third round of the English Open with a 4-1 win over Scott Donaldson.

He will next face Jimmy Robertson or Allan Taylor.

But he didn’t make an immediate change against Donaldson and looked in good form.

After seeing an early lead slip away following a break of 72 from Donaldson, Trump replied with a tournament-high 140 break.

The former world No. 1 then took the next frame 79-29 as he moved one away from victory.

Trump had little trouble closing out the win as another half-century break of 56 saw him across the line.

Mark Selby also advanced with a 4-1 win over Zihao Xing.

British Open runner-up Selby made breaks of 53 and 49 to take the first frame and then made a fine 127 to move 2-1 ahead.

A 93 break saw Selby extend his advantage as he continued to look in good touch.

Both players passed up chances in a scrappy fifth frame before a good safety from Selby earned him a foul and a free ball.

Selby took the opportunity to close out the victory.

Later on in the afternoon, British Open champion Mark Williams confidently dispatched Ian Burns 4-0 to ease his way into the second round.

The match was completed in a mere 50 minutes, and the Welshman never really looked troubled with this dominant display.

He started the match very nicely with a break of 75 to draw first blood in the contest.

The Welshman looked in imperious form and was already halfway towards victory after potting 13 reds, 11 blacks and two blues to claim a century in frame two.

Burns overcut a red to the bottom left corner on his return to the table in frame three, as Williams entered the fray again, but missed his first ball of the contest when he failed to land a tricky looking pink.

After separating the reds, Burns received a warning for twice hitting a red inadvertently, allowing Williams to cruise his way to a 3-0 lead.

The fourth and final frame was slightly closer, and after a Burns double kiss on the red allowed Williams back in, he also failed to pot this ball into the mid pocket, offering the Englishman redemption.

He landed a red in the first ball he managed to pot since frame one, but could not quite take the momentum onwards to leave the table with a score of 28.

He left an awkward-looking table for Williams, but with the black on the bottom cushion, the Welshman utilised the red-pink combination to motor past a half century.

Victory was in sight after polishing off the reds, and despite looking slightly dejected after missing the final black, a break of 94 was enough to complete a comprehensive victory.

In the earlier matches, Cao Yupeng won 4-0 against David Gilbert and Ding Junhui was a 4-1 winner against David Grace.

John Higgins fought back to beat James Cahill 4-2.

Higgins trailed 2-1 but knocked in breaks of 65 and 54 to take the lead, and managed to get safely over the line.
