Queen Elizabeth II’s body leaves Balmoral, embarks on tour of Scotland and England
The coffin bearing Queen Elizabeth II left Balmoral on Sunday morning and began a nine-day farewell journey to her final resting place in Windsor.
A hearse carrying Her Majesty’s body left the Scottish castle at 10 a.m. local time and was scheduled to drive slowly for more than 175 miles to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
Her coffin was set to lie in the Throne Room at the Scottish royal manor before being taken St. Giles’ Cathedral Monday in a procession that includes newly ascended King Charles III.
Queen Elizabeth II will lie in rest at the cathedral for 24 hours and members of the public will be able to hold vigil at her coffin.
On Tuesday, the late queen’s only daughter Princess Anne is expected to escort her mother’s body to London via plane.
Elizabeth will be taken to Buckingham Palace where her coffin was scheduled to rest in Bow Room.
Her body is slated to travel on a gun carriage of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in a public procession and military parade from the palace to Westminster Hall on Wednesday morning.
The coffin will then lie in state for four full days under 24-hour guard by British soldiers before begin taken in a procession to Westminster Abbey for a state funeral on Sept. 19.
The late monarch will then be taken to Windsor Chapel and interred at it St George’s Chapel.
She will be laid to rest near her parents, and the body of her late husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April 2021 at 99 years old, will be relocated to be at her side.
As Brits observe a prolonged mourning period, Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort will embark on trips to Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
