Andy Murray still has ‘lots of good tennis in him’ brother Jamie Murray insists, but must ‘find his mojo’

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray had high hopes heading into the Grand Slam after a positive start to the grass-court season before suffering a second-round exit at SW19.

The 36-year-old was two sets to one up when the tournament’s 11pm curfew suspended play late on Thursday evening and the fifth-seeded Tsitsipas ultimately fought back to win in five

Murray did not confirm after the defeat if he would be back next year, saying “motivation is obviously a big thing”.

However, Jamie Murray thinks his brother can still compete at the top level.

“Will he be back? I hope so,” he said. “Look, I think he still has a lot of good tennis in him. I think he needs to find his mojo and get out there and play some ball.

“I still think he has the level to do a lot of good stuff on the tennis court. I think he had an amazing opportunity this tournament to really go far in a grand slam with players dropping out all over the place.

“I mean the draw really opened up for him. It felt like that. But Tsitsipas played a really good match. I am sure he is disappointed.

“I still think he can do a lot of good stuff. I always expect him to perform well and win matches because I know the level he can produce.

“He needs to find a way to do that. I don’t know what his ranking is now, it is inside 40, but for him to be getting excited he needs to be feeling like he is getting into the top 20 and feel like he is competing at these big events.”

Jamie Murray is currently competing in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon where he is in the last 16.

Brother Andy, meanwhile, is expected to take several weeks off before heading to the USA for the summer hard-court swing, which builds up to the US Open.

Murray has not reached the fourth round of a major since Wimbledon in 2017.

Reflecting on his Wimbledon display, he said: “Losing in the second round, I don’t find that motivating. It’s not why I put all of the work in.

“It’s similar to last year, I guess. I had a long think about things, spoke to my family, and decided to keep on going.

“I’m unbelievably disappointed and upset now. Maybe I will feel different in a few days but right now it doesn’t feel good.”
