PGMOL investigating ‘elbow’ clash between Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis

The PGMOL confirms it is investigating after assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis was caught on camera appearing to elbow Liverpool defender Andy Robertson at half-time of his team’s match against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds were locked in a spectacular tussle with The Gunners at Anfield when the bizarre incident somewhat stole the show.

After the whistle had blown to end the opening 45 minutes with Arsenal 2-1 to the good, Robertson approached the assistant referee and received an elbow to the throat.

The Scotland captain was joined by a host of Liverpool team-mates who then surrounded Paul Tierney to complain.

Robertson was booked in the aftermath.

Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves, reported that Robertson said: “he’s just elbowed me in the throat, the linesman has elbowed me in the throat.”

Also on Sky, Roy Keane stayed resolutely on brand, saying: “Do you know what? Does he grab the linesman first? I’m not sure, but Robertson is then complaining. He should be more worried about his defending. Do you know what he is, that Robertson? I’ve watched him a number of times, he is a big baby. That’s what that guy is. Just concentrate on the game and get on with your defending. He does grab the linesman first.”

While the second half unfolded, with Liverpool storming back to claim a deserved point against the league leaders, PGMOL tweeted confirmation of its awareness of the incident and the imminent investigation.

The statement read: “PGMOL is aware of an incident involving assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson at half-time during the Liverpool v Arsenal fixture at Anfield. We will review the matter in full once the game has concluded.”

After the match Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was asked to give his thoughts on the incident, but remained largely circumspect.

He said: “Didn’t see it. Wasn’t aware of it…So far I didn’t watch it back because, I think let the pictures – how I heard – speak for themselves.”

The draw leaves Arsenal six points clear of Manchester City, while Liverpool occupy eighth spot – 12 points behind Manchester United in fourth.
