13-year-old’s joyride leaves one dead, 10 hurt in fiery Calif. crash

A 13-year-old boy’s reckless joyride left a woman dead and 10 other people injured in a fiery three-car crash in California over the weekend, cops said.

Woodland Police said an officer spotted the boy Saturday evening driving erratically near College Street and Main Street in Sacramento.

The officer tried to stop the unidentified teen, but the kid fled in the car and crashed into two vehicles at the intersection of College and Court Street, police said.

Video of the deadly aftermath shows one of the cars burning underneath another, with first responders rushing to help the victims. Another one of the vehicles also caught on fire after the collision.

Officials said one woman died as a result of the crash and that of the 10 other people who were hurt, three were minors. One of the minors, a 3-year-old, was airlifted to a hospital.

Woodland Police Sgt. Victoria Danzl told reporters at the scene that the teen suspect had stolen the Honda Pilot he was driving from a family member.

“Unfortunately, kids are young, and they do not see their actions have consequences,” Danzl told CBS Sacramento. “Unfortunately, today this was pretty significant.”

Danzl noted that the officer’s pursuit was short and that the teen was not expected to race off when police initially tried to stop him.

The suspect was arrested at the crash scene and taken to the hospital for his injuries. Police said the boy could face vehicular manslaughter charges.

They did not disclose the condition of the driver or of the others who were injured.

The crash occurred in a 25 mph zone in a commercial area, shaking local residents.

“I am totally in shock. Nothing has ever happened here in Woodland like this,” local Judy Fann told CBS.
