15,000 people hurl tomatoes in massive Spanish food fight
That’s one way to paint the town red.
Spaniards and tourists in Buñol, Spain were left covered from head to toe in rotten tomatoes Wednesday after the massive annual food fight left the small town outside Valencia looking like an especially grisly horror movie scene.
The only thing that was massacred, however, was 120 tons of the overripe fruit, which some 15,000 people paid $13 to hurl at each other.
It was all part of the hourlong “Tomatina” street battle that left partiers, streets and houses oozing in red pulp. Immediately afterward, locals sprayed water on everything and everyone.
The annual event began as a food fight between the town’s children in 1945 but evolved into an international tourist attraction. Well-prepared revelers use swimming goggles to protect their eyes from the acidic puree.
The only thing missing was a swimming pool full of pasta.
