3 killed after small plane crashes into hangar at California airport, catches fire

Three people were killed when a single-engine plane crashed into a hangar as it tried to take off from a Southern California airport just outside of Los Angeles Sunday, according to officials.

The Beechcraft P35 burst into flames on impact at Cable Airport around 6:30 a.m. in the city of Upland, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The three victims, a pilot and two passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene after San Bernardino County firefighters put the fire out, Upland police said.

No one else was injured, police said.

The hangar that was hit was moderately damaged, officials said.

Photos at the airport showed a hole in the side of the structure with debris on the ground below.

The small plane crash happened about 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

A probe into the incident has been opened by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.  

The victims’ identities have not been released.
