5 Dead and 6 Injured in Shooting in Louisville, Ky., Police Say

At least five people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting at a bank in downtown Louisville, Ky. on Monday morning, the police said.

Paul Humphrey, the deputy chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, said that police received calls about a shooting at Old National Bank around 8:30 a.m. and when they arrived on the scene, “they encountered active gunshots still being fired inside the location.”

Chief Humphrey said that the suspected gunman, who was not named, was confirmed dead at the scene. “We do not know exactly the circumstances of his death at this time,” he said. It was not yet known what his motive might have been.

Five people were killed inside the bank, the deputy chief said, and at least six people including a police officer were taken to the hospital. He could not confirm the status of the people sent to the hospital.

“There is no active danger known to the public at this time,” Chief Humphrey said.

The bank is across the street from the Louisville Slugger field, a minor-league baseball stadium where the Louisville Bats play.

“Please avoid the area around Slugger Field until further notice,” Craig Greenberg, the Louisville mayor, said on Twitter. “We will provide information as soon as possible.”

Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky said that he was headed to the scene. “Please pray for all of the families impacted and for the city of Louisville,” he said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and the F.B.I. said that they were assisting with the response.
