57% of voters support disqualifying Trump from 2024 ballot if he’s convicted of crime: poll

More than half of voters believe former President Donald Trump should be kept off 2024 ballots if he’s convicted in at least one of the four criminal cases against him, according to a new poll. 

The NewsNation and Decision Desk HQ survey released Monday found a 57% majority support disqualifying the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner, but the results broke sharply across party lines. 

Among Democrats, 85% back Trump’s disqualification upon conviction of a crime, while only 29% of Republicans said the same.

Trump is facing a total of 91 charges across four criminal cases — and up to 712 years and six months behind bars if convicted of all of them. 

This summer, federal grand juries indicted the former president over his alleged efforts to interfere in the 2020 election and his retention of classified materials after leaving office. 

He has also been indicted in Georgia on allegations that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election results in the Peach State, and in Manhattan on charges related to alleged hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in the runup to the 2016 election. 

The poll of 3,200 registered voters, taken between Nov. 26 and Nov 27, comes ahead of the fourth GOP primary debate, which will air on NewsNation Wednesday. 

Trump, 77, will not participate in the event, which may only feature three candidates in the GOP field – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. 

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said last week that he is “confident” he’ll be on stage in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the forum, but it is unclear if he will meet the Republican National Committee’s strict polling and fundraising thresholds by Wednesday. 

The NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ survey found that Christie is the only GOP candidate preferred more by Democrats than by Republicans.

Among Democrats, Christie receives 8% support, while he has only 3% support among members of his own party, the poll found. 

Trump maintains a commanding lead over his primary rivals, reaching 60% support in the NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ survey, while DeSantis and Haley are essentially tied in second and third place, with 11% and 10% of the vote respectively.

Ramaswamy garnered just over 6% support, according to the poll.

President Biden’s approval rating declined by 2 points month-over-month, the survey found, with only 42% of voters strongly or somewhat approving of his job as commander in chief, compared to 44% in October.

Fifty-eight percent of voters responded that they “strongly” or “somewhat” disapprove of his performance as president, compared to 56% in October. 

Voters named inflation as the problem they most want the next president to address, with 52% calling it the biggest issue; Immigration, at 21%, was second; followed by crime, at 19%; and unemployment, at 8%, according to the survey.
