Great Britain’s Matt Weston claims second career gold with impressive victory in Lake Placid

Matt Weston slid to his first World Cup gold of the season with a brilliant performance in Lake Placid.

The 25-year-old stopped the clock in a combined time of 1:48.16 to seal the victory over Germany’s Christopher Grotheer and South Korea’s Seunggi Jung.

The triumph continues to a superb start to the World Cup season for British sliders, with two victories out of a possible three, while Marcus Wyatt narrowly missed out on joining his compatriot on the podium in fourth.

Weston ended Great Britain’s 14-year wait for a men’s skeleton World Cup gold in November 2021 and set himself up for his latest triumph with a stellar first run which saw him top the table in a time of 53.74, the only slider to dip below 54 seconds.

The 2022 Olympian was 0.16 seconds clear of Grotheer overall, with the fastest start time of the second run.

Wyatt was in second place heading into the second run but was unable to hold onto a podium position, denying him a third medal in as many outings this season.

The 31-year-old now sits third in the overall standings leading into the next event on January 6.
