Having played well all week, Williams was the favourite for the match and he started brilliantly with a 138 clearance, but Trump hit back to level things up.
Both players missed chances in the third frame, although Trump took advantage of a missed red from his opponent to go 2-1 ahead.
It was a similar story early in the fourth frame, before Trump went on to record the 888th century of his career.
Two fouls, brilliant red, missed yellow – Drama for Williams
The errors continued for Williams after the mid-session interval as he missed a black off its spot. Trump refused to play a risky long shot on a red, choosing to play off the cushion and into the pack but hit the pink.
He was warned by referee Marcel Eckardt about the three miss rule, so decided to go for the risky pot and got it, which led him to make a break of 73.
Needing to get some momentum going, Williams made a timely century to stop the run of Trump which made it 4-2 to the latter.
A brilliant plant from Williams saw him make a break of 60 and fluked a red to seal the frame.
The three-time world champion went for an ambitious double in the final frame of the afternoon session, which was a long way off, and was punished by Trump who made a break of 89.
