The Ocean Race 2022-23 – Viva Mexico suspend racing after less than 24 hours due to damage

The Viva Mexico team have suspended racing less than 24 hours after the opening leg of The Ocean Race 2022-23 got underway due to damage.

At 11:33 UK time, the team, who are in the VO65 class, revealed they were trying to make Almeria, in South Spain, before assessing their options.

The crew were 25 nautical miles (45km) away from land when announcing their problem.

“We are suspending racing due to a ripped main without repair,” skipper Erik Brockmann wrote.

“We are going for shelter in Almeria and will assess options. All crew are safe.”

At midday on Monday, the WindWhisper Racing Team led the way in the VO65 class from the Mirpuri Foundation Team and the Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova.

In the IMOCA class, 11th Hour Racing Team headed the field from Holcim-PRB and GUYOT environment – Team Europe.

The teams are racing to Cape Verde, an island in the central Atlantic Ocean.
