Iga Swiatek surges into Australian Open third round after easy win over Camila Osorio in Melbourne

Iga Swiatek has surged into the third round of the Australian Open after a 6-2 6-3 win over Camila Osorio.

The world No. 1 had to put up a real fight to beat Jule Niemeier in the first round, but the second was easier for the Pole inside Rod Laver Arena who made it 22 wins in her last 25 matches.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year, will play either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in the next round on Friday.

‘I was really nervous’ – Swiatek fights hard to beat Niemeier

“It was much tougher than the score says,” Swiatek said in her on-court interview after the match.

“She ran for every ball today. She never gave up. She didn’t give me much points for free so I needed to really work for each of them.

“I was really happy that I was being consistent in being proactive and tried to just play a bit faster and with more pressure, but I’m happy that I won and I can play in the next round.”

Swiatek broke the Osorio serve in only the second game of the match, converting a break point when the Colombian fired a backhand into the net.

A double break soon followed as Swiatek moved into a commanding 4-0 lead thanks to another unforced error from Osorio, who was all smiles even when she conceded points.

The world No. 84 prevented the bagel by clawing a break back, but it was not long before Swiatek wrapped up the set. After Swiatek was broken again, she finished the opener off on Osorio’s serve.

Swiatek had to save a break point in the opening game of the second set, but an Osorio double fault at 2-1 down saw the Pole get the break she needed.

Swiatek reeled off eight points in a row to ensure a double break swiftly followed, but Osorio pulled a break back when Swiatek hit what should have been an easy winner wide and consolidated with her next service game.

But Swiatek made no mistake sealing victory on her serve at the second time of asking, sending a backhand winner down the line.
