Who has won the most Alpine World Ski Championships medals?

Christl Cranz’s – who skiied for Germany – has won the most medals at the Alpine World Ski Championships. She has 15, 12 of which are gold.

She won a further three medals at the 1941 Alpine World Ski Championships – gold in the downhill and combined, and a silver in the slalom.

However, the event was contested by nations who were either part of the Axis alliance or were neutral at that point during the Second World War, and in 1946, the International Ski Federation (FIS) would cancel the results, deeming them unofficial. The nations that competed were the German Reich (Austria joined Germany in 1938), Italy, Hungary, Romania, Finland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

On the men’s side, Kjetil André Aamodt has won the most medals: 12.

Additionally, between 1931 and 1939, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships took place every year, rather than every other year as they have done since 1948. Further, the 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1978 and 1980 World Championships were held as part of the Winter Olympics.

Of all the active skiers, Mikaela Shiffrin has 11, Lara Gut-Behrami is on eight and Petra Vlhova has five. Alexis Pinturault also has five medals.

The above stats do not include team events.

Have Great Britain ever won a medal at the Alpine World Ski Championships?

Yes! It may surprise you to learn that Great Britain have won 11 medals at the Alpine World Ski Championships.

Whilst not a dominant force, Britain did produce some fine skiers in the 1930s. Evie Pinching won three medals (two golds and a silver), Esme Mackinnon won two (two golds), Jeanette Kessler won two (two bronzes), and Helen Boughton-Leigh (one silver), Nell Carroll (one silver), Audrey Sale-Barker (one silver) and Doreen Elliot (one bronze) all won one medal apiece.

No British man has ever won a Alpine World Ski Championships medal.

Dave Ryding is the current cream of the crop, and recently stood on the podium at Kitzbuhel. He is the best bet for a British medal this year in the slalom.
