‘Jeopardy!’ fans bitter over easy final clue: ‘Got to be kidding’
Fans just can’t let it go.
“In 1966, the year of his death, he shared plans for an experimental prototype community in Florida,” read the Final Jeopardy! clue in the “famous names” category on Monday’s episode of “Jeopardy!”
Contestants Robbi Ramirez, P.J. Brennan and Rachel Clark each offered the correct answer: “Who is Walt Disney?” Ramirez won the game with $23,800.
Host Ken Jennings noted that “the experimental prototype community of tomorrow became EPCOT.”
As Mickey Mouse fans know, Disneyland opened its doors in Southern California in 1955. Shortly before his death, in 1966, Disney began to develop the Florida complex that would be called Disney World, featuring its EPCOT theme park.
“Jeopardy!” viewers argued the clue was too easy for the final round.
“I’ve been watching Jeopardy for like 20+ years and I cannot recall an easier Final Jeopardy,” tweeted one fan.
“You guys have got to be kidding, how is this a Final Jeopardy and not a $200 question????” someone else wondered.
“Who is Walt Disney. Easiest Final Jeopardy so far,” a Twitter user noted.
One person joked: “I was thinking it can’t be Walt Disney. That’s a Trivial Pursuit, kids edition level question, never mind Final Jeopardy!”
“Who is the legendary Mr. Walt Disney? I think he’d be happy yet shocked at what EPCOT is today. He’d be appalled by how expensive it is tho,” a fan pointed out.
Ramirez, who hails from Orlando, shared on the Jeopardy! Reddit board that the category threw him for a wild loop.
“I would have loved to take that one alone as The Guy from Orlando, but yeah, super easy. Not surprised we all got it,” he explained on the social media feed.
He continued: “The problem was the insanely broad category [‘Famous Names’] that put me on edge. If it had sounded less like it might be any question in the world, I’d have bet more.”
He only wagered $1,400 in the final round.
“If it had been ‘Disney,’ or ‘Theme Parks,’ I’d be several thousand dollars richer. But I had the freedom to play it safe, so I did,” he sighed.
“If I hadn’t gotten this,” he added in a different post, “they wouldn’t have let me back into Orlando.”
Perhaps the clues will be more difficult on the new game show “Jeopardy! Masters.”
Jennings will host the series, which premieres May 8 and features memorable winners Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, Mattea Roach, Andrew He, Sam Buttrey and James Holzhauer.
The tournament consists of 10 one-hour episodes, with all six players appearing in one of the two games each episode.
