Jack Harlow’s ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ debut irks fans: ‘No one wanted this’
The first look at Hulu’s “White Men Can’t Jump” remake — marking Jack Harlow’s acting debut — is here.
In the trailer released Thursday, the “First Class” rapper, 25, and actor Sinqua Walls, 38, put their spin on the 1992 film of the same name that starred Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes.
Similar to the original Ron Shelton-directed film, a white basketball player, portrayed by Harlow, and a black hooper, Walls’ role, are an unlikely pairing that team up in hopes of winning $500,000 in a basketball tournament — realizing along the way that they have “more in common than they imagined possible,” according to the movie’s synopsis.
Thursday’s trailer sees Harlow’s Jeremy as a meditating, juice-cleansing athlete who Walls’ Kamal states dresses like “a white girl at Whole Foods.”
“Hey, they’re letting yoga instructors in the gym now,” says one character when Jeremy, wearing a crew neck that reads “Self-care club,” walks into the room.
The cast also includes the late Lance Reddick, Vince Staples, Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier and Myles Bullock — many of whom appear in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer.
The preview elicited strong reactions from viewers on social media, with many implying that it could be an unoriginal waste of time.
“Why don’t you try harder at making an original movie instead of ruining old movies,” one slammed on Twitter.,
“Sooo this basically an identical remake of the OG but in today’s time period,” said another — a notion that many fans weren’t keen on, as several echoed that “no one wanted this.”
“This is about to be hot garbage compared to the original,” one fan bluntly stated. “It’s honestly sad that originality is gone because studios won’t take a chance. Thanks for ruining not only another classic, but one of my all time favorites.”
Yet some fans are happy to give Harlow and the remake the benefit of the doubt.
“I had my questions about this movie but mannnn that looks pretty dope!” one viewer gushed, while another begged critics to “give it a chance.”
“Y’all hating, this looks entertaining,” one hopeful added.
The Post has contacted a rep for Harlow for comment.
“White Men Can’t Jump” premieres May 19 on Hulu.
