AOC says Marjorie Taylor Greene running GOP House caucus, not Kevin McCarthy
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says the lawmaker leading the House Republican caucus is congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene — not House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
AOC delivered the diss on MSNBC Sunday to former White House press secretary-turned-anchor Jen Psaki, who had asked the lefty pol if she thought McCarthy (R-Calif.) was running the caucus.
“He’s not,” Ocasio-Cortez said, prompting Psaki to ask who was in charge.
“I think you’ve got Marjorie Taylor Greene running the caucus. I mean, and she makes very common public statements to that effect,” Ocasio-Cortez insisted on Inside with Jen Psaki. “Every time something irks her she communicates McCarthy is doing her bidding and I think this is something that is quite clear.”
Republicans have a 222-213 majority in the House over Democrats following the 2022 midterms.
McCarthy struggled mightily to get the votes to become House Speaker, but was finally able to break through with the help of Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) — one of the most vocal and controversial House members.
McCarthy has reportedly praised Taylor Greene behind closed doors and vowed to “always take care of her,” according to a New York Times report from January.
“I think that Speaker McCarthy is stuck between having to please the most racist and heinous elements of his party with having to maintain a majority and he’s having to side with the extremists,” AOC told Psaki.
She also said she does not think McCarthy has the votes for his debt limit proposal.
“He’s kind of brought himself up a creek without a paddle,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx, and Taylor Greene commonly get into spats, mostly over social media.
Ocasio-Cortez cheered as Taylor Greene was reportedly heckled in New York City earlier this month after showing up in the Big Apple to protest the 34-count indictment against former President Donald Trump.
