Sheffield United secure Premier League promotion with victory against West Bromwich Albion

Sheffield United completed a return to the Premier League on Wednesday night as they beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0.

The Blades were relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2020/21 season but had retained some of their better players as they attempted to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.

Six of the 16 players for Sheffield United against West Brom were part of the squad that went up in 2019.

That ended in disappointment last year, when they lost in the play-offs, but their win over West Brom secured a return to the Premier League.

Victory and three points secured them second place behind Burnley, who had already secured their promotion under manager Vincent Kompany earlier in the season.

Two second-half goals were enough for Paul Heckingbottom’s side, as Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge opened the scoring just before the hour mark.

About 20 minutes later, Anel Ahmedhodzic made it two and ensured victory for the home side, with the crowd well aware that victory would see them guaranteed to gain promotion ahead of the chasing pack behind them, who now have to hope for a play-off success over the summer.

Sheffield United face Preston North End, Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City in their remaining three games.
