It was a day for the relegation-threatened clubs to show their bona fides in the Women’s Super League on Saturday, as Leicester handled Liverpool and Tottenham twice fought back for a point against Brighton.

Leicester thrashed Liverpool 4-0 at the King Power, taking the lead after 15 minutes when Josie Green turned home Remy Siemsen’s corner.

Liverpool made a triple substitution at half-time but only three minutes after the restart it was Leicester who got the crucial next goal when Ashleigh Plumptre nodded home from a corner.

Missy Goodwin added the icing on the cake for Leicester with a stoppage-time header from Courtney Nevin’s cross.

The victory sees Leicester jump from bottom of the table to 10th place, leaving Reading and Brighton in their wake. Liverpool stay put at seventh as the season approaches its conclusion.

Managerless Tottenham twice came from behind to snatch a vital point in a 2-2 draw with Brighton.

Both sides are relegation candidates and Spurs have been in wretched form of late, but have the world’s most expensive player to call upon.

Beth England scored both of Tottenham’s goals in the vital draw that keeps Brighton in the drop zone and her own side just above it.

Tottenham had begun the season with aspirations of earning European football but their form deserted them in the early part of the campaign and never returned. The draw against Brighton makes it back-to-back draws for Spurs and five points in five games.

Following their stoppage time victory over Aston Villa last night, Manchester United remain heavy favourites for the title, sitting six points clear of Manchester City and a further one ahead of Chelsea. However, the title rivals have games in hand.

Reading remain bottom of the table with just 11 points from 18 games.
