Sam Kerr scores late to keep Chelsea in hunt for Women’s Super League title with win over Liverpool

Sam Kerr kept Chelsea in the hunt for the Women’s Super League title after her late goal gave them a win against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

With the score level at 1-1, Kerr converted a chance four minutes from time to secure all three points.

The result means Chelsea are now four points behind current league leaders Manchester United, but have two games in hand on United, meaning they can go two points clear if they win both.

Liverpool took an early lead through Emma Koivisto, but Niamh Charles brought parity with a clever header from Even Perisset’s 41st-minute corner.

Emma Hayes’ team pressed after conceding, and had good chances with Kerr and Guro Reiten bringing smart stops from WSL debutant Faye Kriby.

The home side struggled to find their rhythm after the restart but when Jessie Fleming hit the post in the 86th minute, Kerr was on hand to finish.

Chelsea have three consecutive WSL titles to their name, and are in control of their destiny when it comes to a potential fourth straight league win..

The win for Chelsea will be a boost to the morale after they went out of the Champions League in the semi-final stage after defeat to Barcelona, widely regarded as one of the few teams in women’s football who would be favourites to beat Chelsea.

They remain in the hunt for the FA Cup, where they will meet this season’s main adversaries, Manchester United, in May.
