‘Ted Lasso’ scene on consent slammed as ‘forced’ and ‘corny’

“Ted Lasso” took an opportunity to discuss consent in a recent episode, but many viewers are slamming it as “corny” and “forced.”

In the scene, the AFC Richmond team is in their locker room discussing private photos.

“Nah, bro. If you don’t want your private pictures out there, just don’t take naked pictures,” one of the team members said. “Especially being famous.”

Another chimes in, “The only people to blame are d–kheads who steal your s–t and put it online. That’s why I delete all the photos on my phone.”

“Whenever I have a relationship end, I ask the girl to go through my phone, delete any photos, videos, whatever she wants,” one character added. “Yeah, I’m being serious. You know, one girl actually deleted Candy Crush. I was devastated, but I also understood.”

Then the next talking point came: “Hey, hold on. Once someone sends you a photo, don’t you own it?” To which someone responded, “Eh, copyright law on private photography is quite murky.”

“It’s not about the law, it’s about doing what is right.”

Someone posted the clip to Twitter, writing, “The team talking about women being public exposed without their consent was so important !!! isaac, sam, jamie and dani have my heart forever” — but people in the replies had a different take.

“This is the first video I’ve seen from ‘Ted Lasso’ and I’m questioning why it was described to me as a comedy and not something RAs show you during orientation week,” one person said.

“the PSA energy is downright overwhelming. at least the candy crush thing was recognizably a joke…not a great one, but good delivery and an actual joke at least,” another wrote.

“This might be the most contrived, forced application of a social justice message I have seen. None of it seems natural or authentic and they are actors. Almost devalues the entire purpose. Embarrassing stuff,” someone chimed in.

“Shocked that I didn’t have to take a quiz at the end where I was asked to select who was wrong and who was right in order to move to the next training module,” a user quipped.

“I’ve never seen anything from this show, but now that I have, I’m convinced it’s Sesame Street for adults,” one added.

“Yeah just saw this episode last night. Still a good’n, but the social commentary felt hella forced. I don’t even get why they dedicated a whole episode’s theme around a topic like this it’s so out of the blue for the show,” someone commented.

“Didn’t disagree with their sentiment but the delivery and just overall feel of that scene was awful. It didn’t feel real in any sense of the word,” another wrote.

“This is some of the worst dialogue I’ve ever seen in my life lmao,” someone said.

Even Barstool’s Big Cat chimed in, asking, “I haven’t watch ‘Ted Lasso’ since season 1. Was this a PSA ad or the actual acting in a scene?”

Others pointed out that while this scene was definitely cringe, it’s not representative of the show.

“If you haven’t seen the show, please don’t judge it all by just this scene! It’s not all like this. This was a rare very cheesy scene,” a fan wrote.

“This one scene was too corny, but it did advance the plot and needs to be evaluated in the context of the whole episode/season/series,” another said.

“In a vacuum, it has psa vibes but it makes more sense for the other story lines. I’ve been loving this season btw. Not as good as the first two but not far off,” someone else commented.

“Ted Lasso” is currently in its third and final season. New episodes stream Wednesdays on Apple TV+, ending with the series finale on May 31.
