Kylian Mbappe on target as Paris Saint-Germain beat Troyes and move step closer to Ligue 1 title

Paris Saint-Germain moved six points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-1 win away at Troyes to regain control of the title race.

Lens had cut PSG’s lead down to three points with a 2-1 victory over Marseille on Saturday, but this comfortable win for Christophe Galtier’s side leaves them on course for what would be a record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 title.

Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock for the reigning champions in a huge stroke of luck, as Vitinha’s deflected strike hit the crossbar and allowed the frontman to nod home his 36th goal of the season across all competitions.

Troyes were denied what would have been a memorable equaliser after Gianluigi Donnarumma made a stunning save to push away Mama Balde’s diving header.

Vitinha got in on the act himself to double the visitors’ lead in fortuitous circumstances, as his first header was saved before the ball bounced back off the Portugal international’s shins and beat Gauthier Gallon.

It was not all plain-sailing for Galtier’s men though, as Xavier Chavalerin scored after meeting Pape Ndiaga Yade’s cross to halve the deficit.

Any hopes of an unlikely Troyes comeback were effectively extinguished however when Fabian Ruiz fired home PSG’s third goal.

While it might have been a fine evening’s work for the visitors, this result for Troyes leaves Patrick Kisnorbo’s side staring relegation in the face.

They are 12 points adrift of safety with only four games remaining and this is compounded by their inferior goal difference of -31 compared to Auxerre, who sit 16th with 34 points and a goal difference of -24.

PSG can move another step closer to the title when they host 18th-place Ajaccio at the Parc des Princes on May 13.

Meanwhile, Kisnorbo’s men continue their campaign away at Rennes a day later on May 14.

Lionel Messi missed the game for PSG as he serves his club suspension for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.
