Capita says cyber attack will cost £15mn to £20mn

Outsourcer Capita has said the financial impact of a recent cyber attack will be between £15mn and £20mn, as it attempts to recover leaked data and reinforce its defences.

The company, one of the UK’s largest outsourcers, said its own forensic work and that of third-party providers revealed that data was leaked from less than 0.1 per cent of its servers as a result of the attack in March.

“Capita has taken extensive steps to recover and secure the customer, supplier and colleague data contained within the impacted server estate, and to remediate any issues arising from the incident,” the outsourcer said in a statement on Wednesday.

The company said it expected to “incur exceptional costs of approximately £15mn to £20mn associated with the cyber incident”.

Capita said the bill consisted of “specialist professional fees, recovery and remediation costs and investment to reinforce Capita’s cyber security environment”.
