Giro d’Italia 2023: ‘Two down!’ – Thibaut Pinot shows awesome bike handling skills to avoid crash
Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) showed outrageous bike handling skills to avoid being caught up in a nasty crash on a rain-soaked start to Stage 5 at the Giro d’Italia.
The Frenchman was among a small group pushing the pace to get in the day’s breakaway when Martin Marcellusi (Green Project-Bardiani CSF) and Stefano Gandin (Team Corratec-Selle Italia) both went down on a slippery corner.
Despite being on Marcellusi’s wheel, Pinot somehow unclipped his right foot, controlled his speed expertly, weaved towards the pavement and glided through the gap between the horizontal riders.

“Oh no – two down! And Thibaut Pinot avoids it by a whisker,” said Rob Hatch on Eurosport commentary.
Marcellusi failed to rejoin the leaders after his crash but Gandin managed to make the connection, joining Pinot, Thomas Champion (Cofidis) and Samuele Zoccarato (Green Project-Bardiani CSF) in the day’s early move.
“You can see how slippery it was. This is going to be really nervous for everybody,” added Sean Kelly.
Pinot is hoping to leave Italy with the king of the mountains jersey, with the Frenchman currently leading the climbers classification.
