Lost ‘Goonies’ footage reveals hilarious Steven Spielberg prank

Steven Spielberg is famously skilled at directing kids in movies. But a new video that’s surfaced puts the Hollywood heavyweight’s own childlike energy on display.

A decades-old clip posted this week on Twitter shows the “E.T.” filmmaker playing a massive prank on “Goonies” director Richard Donner, back in 1985.

Spielberg, of course, devised the story for the classic family movie about a group of scamps living in Astoria, Oregon, who head out on a perilous adventure.

According to Twitter user @Todd_Spence, after “Goonies” wrapped in ’85, the exhausted Donner headed to Hawaii for a much needed break from work.

But Spielberg wouldn’t let him have a moment’s rest.

The mischief-maker, then about 39 years old, flew the child cast of future stars out to the Aloha State to surprise their director and filmed the big reveal.

The jet-setting actors included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton and Jeff Cohen. The actors who played the Fratelli family — Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano — also made the trek.

The plot worked. An incredulous and giggling Donner, who died in 2021 at age 91, is lounging outside and shouts, “Holy s – – t!… I don’t believe it! Oh my God! What the hell are you doing here?”

An enthusiastic Cohen, who played Chunk, says, “We’re gonna stay with you the whole time you’re here!”

And Astin echoes his joy, saying, “We’re gonna do a sequel to the movie!”
