Carlos Alcaraz adulation at the French Open is now ‘part of his life’ but he is ‘enjoying his moment’ – Alex Corretja

Carlos Alcaraz’s adulation at the French Open and beyond is now “part of his life” but he is “enjoying his moment”, says Eurosport’s Alex Corretja.

Alcaraz shone as he swatted aside Denis Shapovalov in Friday’s night match at Roland-Garros, but it was the sight of the Spanish youngster signing autographs long after the match had ended that caught the eye of Barbara Schett, in The Cube for Eurosport.

“That’s nice to see, that he’s taking time for his fans,” Schett said, who was addressing Alex Corretja courtside.

“He knows that [that he needs to make time for his fans],” Corretja replied.

“He understands that is part of his life right now.

“This is Paris, but you have to see of course in Madrid or Barcelona how it goes, or I believe all around the world.

“But he’s very humble, his parents are here in Paris, they support him.

“His older brother is here, he’s been hitting with him this afternoon [Friday, ahead of the Shapovalov match] for warming up.

“I saw his brother later and said ‘wow you’re hitting well’, and he said ‘yes, because his forehand comes so strong that I need to be aware otherwise he complains!’

“They have an unbelievable relationship, so unified, all together.

“And they tell him, ‘Carlos, this is part of your life right now, to pay attention to the crowds, to sponsors, to TV’.

“The way he’s talking to us, it’s so nice because he’s not like ‘oh, let’s finish’ – no, he’s enjoying his moment.”

Alongside Corretja in Eurosport’s The Cube was Tim Henman, who was impressed with how Alcaraz dealt with his first-ever night match at Roland-Garros.

‘What skill!’ – Alcaraz shows sleight of hand in Shapovalov win

“You’re never quite sure how someone’s going to react to that,” the former British No. 1 said.

“And you just sort of presume because he’s [world] No. 1 and he’s a Grand Slam champion it will all be plain sailing, but he came out and played brilliantly in that first set and laid down a marker to show who’s boss early on.”
