Wimbledon 2023: Cameron Norrie suffers shock defeat before Liam Broady loses to end British men’s hopes
Cameron Norrie suffered a shock Wimbledon exit to American Christopher Eubanks in the second round, before Liam Broady lost to Denis Shapovalov to end British hopes in the men’s draw.
Norrie was the 12th seed at the All England Club but fell to a 3-6 6-3 2-6 6-7(3) loss to the big-serving world No. 43 on Court No. 1.

“[It is] by far the biggest win of my career,” Eubanks said.
“It’s not even a question. There are tons of really good professional tennis players who never get the chance to play the No. 1 Brit at Wimbledon, in an atmosphere like this.
“It didn’t even matter how many people were for me or against me, this is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.”
Norrie’s serve crumbled in the first set in game eight, as he lost every point behind his own racquet to hand the American the advantage.
Eubanks served out to complete an impressive set where he landed eight aces, took 88% of his first-serve points and 86% of his second-serve points.
The British No. 1 did manage to fight back to level things up in the second by taking an early break and remaining unbroken, but it proved to be a short-lived revival.
Eubanks raced into a 3-0 lead in the third before taking a second break as Norrie was serving to stay in the set.
Norrie went a break up in the fourth but this time couldn’t retain his advantage as Eubanks struck back to level things at 4-4.
A tie-break followed, and although it was level at 3-3 at the change of ends, the American came out on court in inspired mood, winning four points in a row to complete his memorable victory.
Eubanks ended the contest with 21 aces and 63 winners in a remarkable display of power, earning a third-round clash with Christopher O’Connell.
Broady was the darling of Centre Court on Thursday when he produced the biggest win of his career against Ruud.
But he couldn’t keep the momentum going against 26th seed Shapovalov, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist.
The Canadian triumphed 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5 in three hours and 12 minutes despite brave resistance from the home favourite.
Broady, ranked 142nd in the world, took the first set to spark hopes of another against-the-odds victory.
But he couldn’t keep Shapovalov at bay from then on in as he earned eight breaks of serve and produced a formidable 14 aces and 50 winners.
