Ravichandran Ashwin bags 12 wickets in match as India crush West Indies in first Test in Dominica

India wrapped up victory by an innings and 141 runs as West Indies were blown away in the first Test in Dominica.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat first, but it was downhill from that moment as India outclassed his side with bat and ball.

After moving into a position of strength during the second session on day three, India captain Rohit Sharma declared to give his bowlers the chance to close out a win inside three days.

On a wearing pitch offering sharp turn to the spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin added seven wickets to his five from the first innings as victory was wrapped up late in the day.

Following Jaiswal’s dismissal, India continued to bat time rather than race towards a declaration – knowing there was lots of time left in the game.

Ajinkya Rahane (3) fell cheaply, but Virat Kohli helped himself to another 50 before falling to the spin of Rahkeem Cornwall for 79.

Rohit called his batsmen in when his side had advanced to 421 for 5, a lead of 271.

On a wearing surface, Rohit turned to spin after four overs of seam from Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat.

The move quickly paid off, as Ravindra Jadeja got a ball to turn sharply to trap Tagenarine Chanderpaul (7) lbw.

A lovely ball drifting across Brathwaite (7) caught the edge of the bat and Rahane snaffled the chance at first slip.

The home batters found the spin of Jadeja and Ashwin tough to handle, as Raymon Reifer (11) fell to the former and Jermaine Blackwood (5) to the latter – both lbw.

Local boy Alick Athanaze played some aggressive shots in a spirited counter-attacking knock of 28, but Ashwin found the edge of his bat and Jaiswal snapped him up at short leg.

Ashwin continued to find turn and bounce, and the West Indies lower order had no answers – as Joseph, Cornwall and Kemar Roach all fell to the spinner.

Jomel Warrican came out as the last man and brought the crowd to life with an array of attacking strokes, the highlight being a reverse sweep for four off Ashwin.

Warrican’s fun came to and after an entertaining 18 – with Ashwin claiming his seventh victim of the innings for match figures of seven for 131.
