‘Barbie’ movie aesthetic takes Big Apple by storm
‘Barbie’rians are at the gate.
The iconic doll might hail from Malibu, CA, but scores of New Yorkers are embracing their inner “Barbie,” as the eponymous movie hit theaters this weekend and Gothamites painted the town pink.
Battery Park resident Bebby Siseido wore pink every day of the week to pay homage to her favorite childhood toy.
“I was basically the only child until I was 7, so I had a lot of time by myself,” the 28-year-old advertising professional explained. “My parents both worked so Barbies were my best friends.
“I had probably 30 plus Barbies.”
A native of Indonesia, Siseido’s first memories involve Barbie.
“I remember my dad went on a work trip to New York. I was probably around 3. And there was one Barbie that had a watch that I could also wear. It was the cutest thing,” she recalled.
It wasn’t just Siseido showing her Barbie love. The Times Square ’70s-inspired restaurant Peachy Keen hosted a Malibu Barbie Beach Party, complete with a pink cocktails, photos ops with Barbie pool floats and a manicure station.
Drag queen Prima Love entertained the pink-hued crowd of 275, and changed costumes throughout the evening, from Swimsuit Barbie to Cowgirl Barbie to Sexy Barbie.
“I was not allowed to play with Barbies as a kid. I was a pastor’s kid, so Barbies were exiled. But now I get to be my free authentic Barbie self in the city,” said the New Jersey native.
Partygoer Anna Rock showed Barbie’s brainy side — dressing up as Chef Barbie — complete with a fake lobster tucked into her apron belt.
“She’s a woman of many professions,” noted Rock.
Amid the dozens of other Barbie parties around the city this weekend, The Painted Pot in Park Slop hosted pottery-painting, with guests creating ceramic high heels and other Barbie-themed accessories.
Barbie has even transformed Gotham food this weekend. Murray Hill’s The Flying Cock is hosting a Barbie brunch, complete with pink carpet. Liberty Bagels has been serving up pink bagels. Jasper’s Taphouse in Hell’s Kitchen is pouring pink, hibiscus-infused Barbie-Ritas.
Chef Saul Montiel at Cantina Rooftop in Hell’s Kitchen posted an Instagram video showing how he is preparing corn with pink “Barbie mayo.”
He wore his loyalty on his sleeve, posting, “We didn’t make anything for Ken, because, you know, Ken doesn’t deserve this.”
