Jonas Vingegaard reveals he will ride Vuelta a Espana following Tour de France, co-leader with Primoz Roglic
Jonas Vingegaard has confirmed he will ride the Vuelta a Espana next month.
After his success in France last year he was much less active in major events, but this time he evidently feels fresh enough to compete.
Vingegaard has only ridden the Vuelta once back in 2020 when he finished 46th, assisting Roglic to claim victory. Roglic boasts three Vuelta triumphs, with his last win coming in 2021.
Roglic and Vingegaard have not teamed up since the Tour de France in 2022, where Roglic focused on assisting his team-mate following his own heavy crash.
The Dane is set to take on the third Grand Tour of the year with the aim of landing a major double in 2023.
Speaking to Eurosport ahead of the final stage of the Tour, Vingegaard said: “We made the decision in November last year, so it’s been the plan all the time. Now was the moment to break it.
“I’m really looking forward to the Vuelta. Of course I will enjoy the Tour de France win, but in one week I will start focusing on the Vuelta.”
Given Roglic’s success in the Giro d’Italia and the likely Tour win for Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma have the chance of lifting a famous hat-trick this year.
The Vuelta runs from August 26 to September 17, and is expected to contain a stellar field including the likes of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–QuickStep) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), the former winning last year’s edition.
Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) is also expected to compete, as are Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora–hansgrohe), Enric Mas (Movistar), Richard Carapaz (EF Education–EasyPost) and Spanish youngster Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).
