Virgin Media 02 to axe 2,000 jobs

Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to lay off 2,000 staff in the first big job cuts at the telecoms company since it was created two years ago.

The group said on Tuesday that it had briefed employee unions and representative groups on its proposals. 

It joins rivals BT and Vodafone in reducing headcount, as the companies seek to cut costs and capitalise on the digital revolution.

“As we continue to integrate and transform as a company, we are currently consulting on proposals to simplify our operating model to better deliver for customers, which will see a reduction in some roles this year,” the company said. 

“While we know any period of change can be difficult, we are committed to supporting all of our people,” it added.
