Poland win Speedway World Cup ahead of Great Britain as Maciej Janowski claims victory in decisive Heat 20

Poland narrowly beat Great Britain to the 2023 Speedway World Cup title on a dramatic night in Wroclaw, Poland.

The Brits had the better start to the event, but the Polish title defenders recovered and the sides exchanged the overall lead several times.

It all came down to the final heat with Poland leading Great Britain by a single point.

Robert Lambert defended for his life, but, eventually, Maciej Janowski made a move stick in the late stages of the race to outscore the Briton and secure the trophy for his nation.

Denmark too were in it until the very end, trailing by two points with one heat to go, but had to settle for third.

Meanwhile, Australia had a difficult start to the night but worked themselves right back into contention, largely due to the efforts of Jack Holder.

However, the Aussies suffered a major blow when Holder retired with an injury in Heat 15.
