2 children, 3 adults injured in boat fire at Massachusetts yacht club

Five people, including two children, were hospitalized after the boat they were on caught fire at a Massachusetts yacht club Saturday.

The fire department responded to a report of a boat blaze on the fueling dock of the Metropolitan Yacht Club in Braintree, about 14 miles south of Boston.

Braintree Fire Department officials told WCVB that a retired city cop jumped into action after he spotted the blaze.

He immediately used his own boat to pull the burning craft away from the gasoline and into open water, avoiding a disaster.

“This had the potential to be a catastrophic situation, but the quick thinking of the young woman at the fuel dock to hit the emergency shutoff and the actions of the retired officer pulling the boat away from the dock prevented that from happening,” the captain told the outlet.

By the time the fire department arrived, the boat was completely engulfed in flames about 300 yards from the dock.

Six adults and four children, including a baby, were on board when the fire started, officials told NBC 10 Boston. Two of the children were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Two adults were taken to the hospital with potentially serious burns and another woman was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The charred wreckage of the capsized boat was seen floating in the water after the blaze had been extinguished, video from WCVB shows.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
