Van Jones ousted from his woke nonprofit amid fiscal woes
Activist entrepreneur Van Jones has been ousted from a woke nonprofit he founded amid internal rancor and fiscal mismanagement, according to a report — even though the group is swimming in donated cash from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
The CNN commentator was recently bounced from the board of Dream.org, a “justice innovation” organization he established in 2015, the Daily Beast reported.
Bezos gifted Jones with a $100 million blank check for his philanthropic work in 2021, in a press conference following the billionaire’s trip into space aboard his company Blue Origin’s first commercial flight.
In addition, Jones’s group Green for All, an environmental advocacy initiative operating under the Dream.org umbrella, received a separate $10 million Bezos grant in 2020.
But the group has been burning through the cash with little to show for it, leading to Jones’s break with the nonprofit’s board of directors.
“Quite a few people have questions about the fiscal stewardship that Dream.org has had,” said CeCe Grant, who served as the group’s director of government affairs before departing in April.
The cash infusion from Bezos sparked a Green for All hiring spree that nearly doubled its annual expenses — without ever forming a coherent plan of action.
“No one was sure what we were doing or what our strategy was,” one ex-employee said.
Another recalled doing outreach to local environmental groups to ask if they wanted to collaborate with Green For All. “They’d say, ‘What do you have to offer?’” the former employee said.
“And we’d say, ‘We don’t know yet.’”
The overspending led to layoffs, said sources — who blamed Jones for a lack of attention to the organization.
“He can’t stay at anything for longer than a few years before passing it off,” one insider complained.
Instead, Jones has been busily hobnobbing with the super-rich — such as his July trip to Idaho’s swanky Sun Valley ski resort for Allen & Co.’s annual “summer camp for billionaires,” stocked with A-list tech, media and business moguls.
Jones’s spokesperson did not deny his departure from the Dream.org board.
“Van continues to work with Dream.org in the justice innovation space and beyond,” the spokesperson said.
“He is a proud supporter of their work at every level.”
