Katarina Johnson-Thompson surges into second place in heptathlon at World Athletics Championships in Budapest
Katarina Johnson-Thompson is hot on the heels of American rival Anna Hall in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest after surging into second place on Saturday evening.
The former world champion finished fastest in the discipline, moving ahead of the entire field bar Hall.
Three disciplines remain tomorrow; the long jump, javelin, and 800 metres.
Speaking after the evening session, the 2019 World Champion explained that she believes she can drive to victory on Sunday.
She said: “I feel like anybody who’s won a major championship has the ability to say, ‘I’ve done it before therefore it can be done again’.”
Elsewhere on Saturday, Zharnel Hughes won his heat in the 100m, powering through despite a faulty start. Fellow Brit Eugene Amo-Dadzie qualified in the same event after finishing second in his heat.
British trio Josh Kerr, Neil Gourley and Elliot Giles all qualified for the 1500m final. Gourley, the top-ranked British mile runner, was briefly troubled in his heat before digging himself out to finish third.
Dutch runner Siffan Hassan missed out on gold in the 10,000m, stumbling just short of the line after leading much of the way. She finished with no medal after Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay took the gold.
Later in the evening, Lewis Davey, Laviai Nielsen, Rio Mitcham and Yemi Mary John were the beneficiaries of a nasty fall suffered by Dutch runner Femke Bol in the final stretch of the 4x400m mixed relay. That misfortune gave the British team a silver medal. It was the first medal won by the British team in Budapest.
Speaking after being handed her medal, John spoke to BBC Sport.
She said: “It was a fight and we knew it would be. My last 100m is my strongest and I had to do what I’m good at and close.”
