World Championships: ‘A bunch of glass went into my right eye’ – Andrew Hudson involved in buggy crash before 200m heat

A number of athletes were involved in the crash as they were being transported from the training centre to the stadium, with one of the passengers – reportedly a volunteer – falling to the ground due to the impact.

Also in Hudson’s buggy was American world champion Noah Lyles, with their heat delayed by 30 minutes as a result.

“A bunch of glass went into my right eye,” Hudson said, after finishing fifth. “My eyesight is pretty blurry every time I open my eye.”

Hudson was seen rubbing his right eye on the onboard camera before finding out the extent of the damage.

“I was trying to get the glass out of my eye,” he added. “I went back to medical, the doctor said I had some shards of glass in it.

“He tried to push it out as best as possible. World Athletics asked me if I was going to run or not. It was kind of run or lose my spot. I worked so hard to be here, so I thought I would at least try.

“It is my first World Championships so it’s going to be memorable… maybe I’d better walk next time.”

Lyles won the semi-final in a time of 19.76 seconds and will be joined on the starting blocks by Hudson, who missed out initially but was granted a spot in the final following a referee’s decision.

The incident is being investigated by the local organising committee.

Elsewhere, there was another bizarre moment as Anthonique Strachan was given a scare by a mascot in the queue room.

Moments after her 200m semi-final, the 30-year-old sat down as she waited to find out if she had done enough to advance to the final, only to be startled back to her feet as the Hungarian-inspired mascot leapt from behind the couch.

Strachan was able to see the funny side, thankfully, but didn’t make the final.
