US Open: Ons Jabeur battles physical struggles to reach round two, Katie Boulter also through after big win
Ons Jabeur battled physical struggles to reach round 2 of the US Open, as Britain’s Katie Boulter also went through after a highly impressive win.
Jabeur is one of the favourites to win in New York and with three out of six breakpoints taken in the first set at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, her Colombian opponent was unable to resist the Tunisian.
In the second set Osoria was much steelier and she rallied hard to force a tie-break to attempt to level the scores.
However Jabeur’s experience told as she made fewer errors to grind out the win.
The 29-year-old world No. 5 has been in exceptional form this year, but having finished as a runner-up here last year, and in both of the last two Wimbledon tournaments, she will hope to go one better.
Britain’s Boulter joined Jabeur in the next round after a 6-4 6-4 victory over France’s Parry.
Boulter, the 2023 Nottingham Open champion,.was in ruthless mood as she took four of the five breakpoints she earned, with Parry unable to take a single one as she was bagelled in the second set.
Reaching the second round is the furthest she has managed in New York, but she will be looking to go further than her third round finishes at Wimbledon for the past two years.
