US Open 2023: Day 5 Order of play and schedule – When are Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek and Caroline Wozniacki playing?
With the world No. 1 ranking tucked away irrespective of the outcome of the tournament, Novak Djokovic can focus on winning the US Open.
The Serbian has not no trouble in advancing to the third round, and he will hope for something similar when he takes on fellow countryman Laslo Djere in New York on Friday.
In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek will be across the net from Kaja Juvan of Slovenia, while Caroline Wozniacki will hope her comeback can keep on rolling against Jennifer Brady.
Tommy Paul will have home support on his side when he kicks thongs off on Arthur Ashe against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while there will be a night match featuring an American as Coco Gauff faces off against Elise Mertens.
Louis Armstrong often provides an excellent atmosphere when home players are in action in the evening. A New York crowd could get lively when Taylor Fritz takes on Jakub Mensik.
Top women’s match – Caroline Wozniacki v Jennifer Brady
Whisper it quietly, but there is the makings of a fairytale in New York.
Three years after retiring in 2020, Wozniacki returned to the WTA Tour – albeit with little expectation.
She arrived at Flushing Meadows, the scene of two defeats in finals in 2009 and 2014, with no form to go on.
She will look to carry on the momentum, but will be tested by American Jennifer Brady, who took out a seed of her own in the previous round when getting the better of Magda Linette in three sets.
Top men’s match – Novak Djokovic v Laslo Djere
On paper, it looks extremely good for Djokovic – and so it should for a 23-time Grand Slam champion.
The 36-year-old is up against a player he should have bundles of information on, and emerged victorious the only previous time they have met.
But back in 2022, Djere made Djokovic work extremely hard for a 2-6 7-6(6) 7-6(4) win in Belgrade.
Djere has improved as a player since then and his run to the third round at Flushing Meadows is his best result at a Grand Slam.
With no pressure on his shoulders, Djere could play with freedom and may land a few blows.
Whether he has enough power to deliver any telling blows is a cause for debate, but Djokovic may get his first test of the event.
