Brussels Diamond League: Laura Muir wins 1500m, Jakob Ingebrigtsen breaks 2000m world record dating back 24 years
Laura Muir won the women’s 1500m, while Jakob Ingebrigtsen smashed a world record in the men’s 2000m at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels.
It has been a fine turnaround for Muir since a sixth-placed finish at the World Championships, winning the 800m race in Zurich and following that up with this 1500m victory.
She won with a season-best time of 3:55.34, while the podium was completed by Ireland’s Ciara Magean with a time of 3:55.87 and Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir (3:56.93).
Meanwhile, Ingebrigtsen claimed a well-deserved share of the headlines after a storming performance in the men’s 2000m.
It is neither an Olympic nor World Championships event, but the Norwegian made the most of the opportunity to run in at the Diamond League.
He won the race with a time of 4:43:13 to break a world record dating back 24 years, ahead of Kenya’s Reynold Kipkorir and Stewart McSweyn of Australia. They finished with times of 4:48.14 and 4:48.77, respectively.
The record beat Hicham El Guerrouj’s previous time set in 1999, and served as redemption after his surprise defeat in the 1500m final at the World Championships last month.
There was to be no world record for Shericka Jackson, but the Jamaican still registered a new Diamond League record in the women’s 200m with a time of 21.48.
Elsewhere, the British duo of Zharnel Hughes and Dina Asher-Smith both claimed podium finishes in the men’s and women’s 100m after coming second and third, respectively.
It was a frustrating night for Hughes, who could not quite get the better of American Kenny Bednarek, as his time of 19.79 seconds was enough for victory.
Hughes registered a time of 19.82 to fall agonisingly short, while Canada’s Andre de Grasse was third after clocking 19.89.
Asher-Smith started the women’s 100m in fine fettle, only to finish third in 10.97 as Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah came out on top with a time of 10.84, ahead of her compatriot Natasha Morrison (10.95).
Dutchwoman Femke Bol was victorious in the women’s 400m hurdles in 52.11, ahead of the Jamaican duo of Janieve Russell (53.80) and Rushell Clayton (54.10).
