BP chief executive Bernard Looney is to resign less than four years into the job, according to two people with knowledge of the decision.
His departure was not due to financial performance, but rather due to past personal relationships with colleagues, the people said.
Looney, 53, joined BP in 1991 aged 21 and has spent his entire career at the company. The Irish citizen was appointed chief executive in 2020 to transform the oil producer into an integrated energy company and navigate the energy transition.
A BP spokesperson could not immediately comment. Looney did not respond to requests for comment.
Looney has pledged to cut oil and gas production to reduce carbon emissions, while investing in clean energy technologies.
