Simulators and shoot-outs – Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy detail rules and format for TGL golf league
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have outlined the format and rules for their new TGL golf league, which has seemingly been launched in a bid to challenge the breakaway LIV Golf.
The TGL golf league will take place at the SoFi Center at Palm Beach State College in Florida and will see players hit balls into a simulator screen.
It all gets started in January, with a number of golf stars signed up to take part, including 2022 US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick and fellow 2023 Ryder Cup winners Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.
The likes of John Rahm, Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley are also set to compete.
The 24 players involved will be split into six teams, who will each represent a different part of America.
Five of those areas have already been confirmed; Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Los Angeles Golf Club, TGL New York and TGL San Francisco.
Those teams will compete over 15 weeks for the right to reach the semi-finals and final of the tournament.
The format will see players hit on a simulator from grass tee boxes, as well as fairways, bunkers and the rough, before coming away from the simulator screen when they get within 50 yards of the hole.
Those matches will be played across two sessions, with a combinations of triples, foursomes and singles.
A penalty shoot-out format will be used to decide any tied matches, with a team attempting to hit two shots closer to the hole than their opponents.
The inaugural season will get under way in just over two months on January 9.
The second week of the competition will be on January 16.
