Philly pizza shop employee shoots and kills armed man in attempted robbery

A Philadelphia pizza shop employee killed a would-be-robber in a shootout on Saturday night, according to police.

Two armed men entered George’s Pizza on Oxford Avenue in the city’s Frankford neighborhood around 8 p.m. and tried to rob the store, Philadelphia police told WPVI.

At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two men and the store employee, cops said.

One of the suspects was shot several times in the head and upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The other suspect fled. It’s not clear if he was struck in the gunfight.

Nothing was taken from the shop and no injuries were reported, cops said.

One witness at the scene told WPVI that he spoke to the employee, who said he acted in self-defense.

“What I saw was a guy lying down on the ground. Blood. The owner’s son said he had to shoot him because the guy was shooting at him. Said he had to shoot back self-defense,” Bill Hackett of Frankford told the outlet.

The deceased suspect has not yet been identified by police.
