Kelly Clarkson, Jenna Bush Hager on weight and chubby stages
“Today” show co-host Jenna Bush Hager and her sister, Barbara Bush, appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Monday to discuss their upcoming book “Love Comes First” — and their past as former first daughters.
During the segment, host Clarkson, 41, showed the sisters a photo of themselves taken during their father former President George W. Bush’s term in office. In the snapshot, they wore matching blue lace dresses, to which Bush Hager, 41, remarked: “We were chubby.”
“You were not,” Clarkson replied.
Bush Hager then turned to her sister and asked if she thought she was chubby.
“I don’t think you know what chubby is,” the “Since U Been Gone” singer chimed in. “You can’t ask somebody that! She’s not gonna be like, ‘You were a chub club.’”
Bush Hager then clarified that she was speaking about a specific stage in her life.
“In my life was I chubby,” Bush Hager said, before asking Barbara if she agreed.
“There was a stage,” Barbara confirmed, to which Clarkson claimed that she also had “many stages.”
“I had a stage,” the musician stated. “I’ve had many stages.”
“I love losing weight, but here’s the thing …,” the “Stronger” singer continued. “Jeans are so hard when you have a butt and a smaller waist.”
The singer, who lost weight in 2018, revealed she always felt “bigger” than other girls — even when competing on “American Idol” in 2002.
“Even on ‘American Idol’ I was really thin, but I was bigger than the other girls on the show, so people would say things to me,” Clarkson previously told People. “But luckily I am super confident, so I’ve never had a problem with shutting people down and saying, ‘Yeah, you know, that’s just what I’m rocking. It’s fine.’”
In 2017, the “Because of You” songstress told Attitude magazine that she “wanted to kill myself” because she was so miserable maintaining a slim figure.
“When I was really skinny, I wanted to kill myself. I was miserable, like inside and out, for four years of my life. But no one cared, because aesthetically you make sense,” the singer told the outlet. “It was a very dark time for me. I thought the only way out was quitting.”
She added: “I like wrecked my knees and my feet because all I would do is put in headphones and run. I was at the gym all the time.”
According to the singer, she was surrounded by a ton of negative people who didn’t help in her ongoing struggle.
“I was around some really negative people, and I got out of it because I had a lot of great people there too,” Clarkson said. “It was a case of turning around, facing them and walking toward the light.”
