Soldier’s family of four found dead in Fort Stewart house

A family of four was found dead in their military base home in Georgia, the Army announced Thursday.

The bodies of a female soldier, her husband and their two children were discovered at the on-post Fort Stewart property just past 2 p.m. Wednesday after the soldier’s unit requested a welfare check.

The four individuals were found unresponsive, but not pronounced dead until 5:30 p.m., according to the Army base.

The Army did not reveal the cause of their deaths, but called it an “isolated incident.”

“There is no reason to believe that there is an extended threat to our community,” the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield said in a Facebook post.

The Army did not immediately release the names of those found dead, pending family notification.

Thomas Hamilton, a spokesperson for the Army Criminal Investigation Division, said that “the individuals associated with this incident have been identified.”

He declined to say whether any suspects had been apprehended or were being sought.

Fort Stewart is the biggest Army post east of the Mississippi River and is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

It is the latest in a string of tragic deaths to swarm the Army base.

Last year, Spc. Shay A. Wilson, 28, of Queens, New York allegedly used a privately owned firearm to gun down 30-year-old Sgt. Nathan Hillman of Plum, Pennsylvania inside one of the fort building complexes.

It’s not clear what prompted Wilson to fire at the decorated seven-year veteran.

Months earlier, a medical evacuation pilot was killed when he crashed his helicopter into another Black Hawk in what officials ruled as a suicide.

Two years earlier, a former U.S. Army sergeant stabbed a fellow soldier to death in 2020 for snitching on his drug use.
