UK Championship snooker: Mark Selby aims to leave best friend Barry Hawkins feeling flat in York – ‘In the next room’

Snooker’s version of the odd couple will take on a new twist when best friends Mark Selby and Barry Hawkins collide in the last 16 of the UK Championship in York.

Selby and Hawkins are sharing a flat at the tournament and will face off at the Barbican after both players enjoyed opening victories on Monday.

Two-time UK champion Selby demolished Mark Joyce 6-0 in just under two hours with a superb display after Hawkins had battled past Ben Woollaston 6-4 from 3-1 down earlier in the day.

It means they will be swapping the dinner table for the snooker table as they chase a quarter-final spot on Wednesday evening.

“It’s a lovely apartment we are in, but we are in the next room to each other.

Selby on burgeoning belief after flying start at UK Championship – ‘Feel like something has clicked’

“At the start of the competition, he said that he’d looked at the accommodation and asked if I fancied sharing an apartment.

“The draw came out for the seeds and we knew if we both won we would play each other.

“I said to him that I was going to have the apartment all to myself! Barry is a great lad, one of my best friends on the tour and a great player.

“He is one of the form players, so I will need to play somewhere similar to today to compete.”
