‘It’s a plant!’ – Luca Brecel wows with outrageous long-range showboat at Scottish Open 2023

Luca Brecel showed his class with a simply stunning long-range plant on two reds at the far end of the table at the Scottish Open.

Martin O’Donnell produced a huge shock as he defeated the world champion 4-2 in their evening encounter at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh in a result that few people saw coming.

Despite the massive blow that it was for Brecel to bow out of the prestigious Home Nations event at such a premature stage, he did at least manage to prompt a big ovation with a wonderful shot.

Leading 50-37 in the fifth frame while trailing 3-1 to his opponent, Brecel found himself with not many options as the cue ball was near to the black with the two remaining reds lodged together at the opposite end of the table.

But somehow he saw a shot that most observers would not have seem coming as he fired the cue ball into the side of the left-hand red and sent the other flying into the bottom-corner pocket.

It was a magnificent shot and one which had the crowd in Edinburgh in raptures.

Philip Studd, on commentary for Eurosport at the time, simply exclaimed “It’s a plant!” as he failed to hide his disbelief.
