Sen. Rick Scott third GOP lawmaker ‘swatted’ during holidays
Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) became the third GOP member of Congress to be “swatted” during this week’s holiday recess, following earlier false reports to law enforcement of incidents at the homes of Reps. Brandon Williams (R-NY) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
“Last night, while at dinner with my wife, cowards ‘swatted’ my home in Naples. These criminals wasted the time & resources of our law enforcement in a sick attempt to terrorize my family,” Scott posted Thursday on X.
The Republican senator also thanked the Naples Police Department and the Collier County Sheriff’s Department “for all they do to keep us safe.”
“Swatting” calls usually allege violent incidents have occurred to prompt a show of force by law enforcement on an unsuspecting person.
Naples Police Lt. Bryan McGinn told The Post that officers received a dispatch call at roughly 9:02 p.m. Wednesday from someone claiming a shooting had occurred at Scott’s home.
“Within 15 minutes, we were able to confirm that the events did not occur and the incident was a swatting event,” McGinn said. “This is very much an active and ongoing investigation.”
An incident report obtained by The Post shows the male caller, who identified himself as “Jamal,” said he had shot his wife with an AR-15 rifle three times because she was sleeping with another man.
“Jamal indicated he was holding a hostage and demanded $10,000. He said the hostage was his wife’s boyfriend, Michael. Jamal said he was in possession of a pipe bomb and, if not provided the $10,000, would blow up the house,” the report reads.
But officers conducted a search of the residence’s perimeter, points of entry and interior, finding no signs of forced entry or anything described by the caller.
The report also notes that “‘Jamal’s’ voice sounded as if it was computer generated/artificial.”
Williams and Greene were both “swatted” on Christmas Day by unknown callers, with the Georgia congresswoman claiming it was the eighth time she had received such a visit from law enforcement while in office.
“Our home was swatted this afternoon. Thanks to the Deputies and Troopers who contacted me before arriving,” the 56-year-old Williams, whose upstate district includes the cities of Syracuse and Utica, announced Monday on X. “They left with homemade cookies and spiced nuts! Merry Christmas everyone!”
“My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn’t have to deal with this,” Greene said on X after a suicide hotline received a call from a person who also claimed that he shot his girlfriend and was threatening to kill himself.
“I appreciate them so much and my family and I are in joyous spirits celebrating the birth of our savior Jesus Christ!”
Greene blamed an “incredible double standard” from federal law enforcement over their laid-back response, comparing the reaction with “how the FBI and DOJ treats J6’ers, [President] Trump, and their political enemies.”
“And after today, I have been swatted 8 times but the FBI can’t seem to figure out who is responsible for the swatting and says the law doesn’t allow them to track them down,” she added, saying she would introduce legislation next year “to track down swatters.”
“The FBI can do so many things, has even abused FISA to spy on hundreds of thousands of Americans, but can not figure out who wants me killed by a hail of bullets fired by a SWAT team responding to murder suicide calls supposedly coming from me.”
The bureau did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
